Amelia Root
Narrative of Davalos Family 1/17/2020
It was in Robbins, CA where Prospero (Pete) and Amelia met. At that time, Pete worked in the fields and Amelia worked with her family cooking for the migrant field workers. Then Amelia and her family moved to Tulare to pick cotton; Pete followed. They eventually married in Tulare in 1934. She was 24 and Pete was 27. Their wedding picture shows Adeline and Jesse (sister and brother of Amelia) and another couple at their wedding. They had eight children, Theresa, Clara, Pete Jr, Dolores, Gloria, Bob, Bill and Molly. Theresa and Bill are now deceased. The Davalos family lived in the Los Angles area and eventually moved to Woodland in 1944. At that time, they moved in with the Zaragoza family, all living at 309 B Street in Woodland (about 20 adults and children, plus other relatives). In 1945, the Zaragoza family bought a home on 4th Street in Woodland, and the Davalos family bought and remained at the home at 309 B Street.
Prospero died of prostate cancer in 1980 and Amelia died in 1994 after a prolonged illness. Pete and Amelia encouraged their children to have positive community and family values. They also encouraged their children to get good grades at school, to get a high school diploma, and to further their education. They often said, without an education you have no choice; with an education you have a choice. The 309 B Street home is still there and now totally renovated, but while living there the Davalos family recalls having some great times, many family gatherings and great memories. Pete and Amelia are buried in Woodland near Amelia’s father and many family members, and where they spent most of their lives with fond memories of family and friends.
